Buck knives first came into being in the year 1902 as a result of the experiments of a blacksmith apprentice by the name Hoyt Buck. Buck was trying to find out ways by which steel can be tempered well so that the edges would hold for a longer period of time. He found out that using worn out steel to make knives would improve their durability. Hoyt Buck made knives for the army troops during World War II, for which he was greatly appreciated. After the war, he moved to San Diego, set up a shop called H.H. Buck & Son with his son Al and started making Buck knives on a large scale. Buck knives come in different types with a variety of sizes and shapes from the small and handy pocket knives to the bigger hunting knives. The two most commonly used types of Buck knives are:

• Fixed blade knives – These knives have blades that are attached or fixed to the handle of the knives. Fixed blade knives do not have any folding mechanism and so the blades are always exposed. Therefore, as a safety measure, these knives are usually carried inside a protective sheath. The fixed knives are stronger and durable when compared to the other types. They are well suited for field dressing as well as camping tasks. Because of their high strength and durability, fixed blade knives are most preferred by people who take hunting very seriously.

• Folding knives – Unlike the fixed-blade knives that remain open all the time, folding knives offer more safety and convenience in that they can be folded into the handle when not in use. These knives are available in different types and some even come with multiple knife tips and other tools.
